Comfort Food

Here in Hawai`i, poi is the number one comfort food. Poi with kalua pig, poi with lomi salmon, but for some reason, when the whole world is against you, the thing that REALLY helps is poi with sardines. Just put a bag worth of poi in a big saimin bowl, dump a tin of sardines on top, and by the time you eat it all, you will feel MUCH better!

Sardines in the Pacific

A little about sardines, et al:
Sardines are small or half-grown herring or their relatives in the Clupeidae family. "Sardine" has also come to mean any small similar fish, in the Clupeidae family or not.
Anchovies are any of several species of Engraulidae, which are similar to herrings, but generally a bit smaller and more slender. People in the USA tend to favor the ones tined in salt and oil - very strong flavored.
None of which should be confused with Smelt, which are Osmeridae - the most important in
grilled Sardineshuman consumption being the American Osmerus morax and the European O. eperlanus.

While you are eating, visit Wikipedia and learn more about these flavorful finsters.
